Computer Delivered IELTS

The CD IELTS refers to the Computer Delivered IELTS test, which is an alternative to the traditional paper-based IELTS (International English Language Testing System). The content, structure, and scoring of the CD IELTS are the same as the paper-based version, but the main difference is that one takes the test on a computer instead of writing it by hand.

Test Format

The CD IELTS has the same format and structure as the traditional paper-based IELTS, but some aspects of the test-taking experience differ due to the use of a computer.

Sections of the Test

1. Listening

  • Duration: 30 minutes + 2 minutes to check your answers.
  • You’ll listen to a series of recordings and answer questions on the computer.
  • You can adjust the volume of the audio.
  • Unlike the paper-based test, you type your answers directly on the screen. There is no extra 10-minute transfer time like in the paper-based IELTS.

2. Reading

  • Duration: 60 minutes.
  • You’ll read passages displayed on the screen and answer questions.
  • The computer format allows you to navigate easily between questions, highlight text, and make notes.

3. Writing

  • Duration: 60 minutes.
  • You will type your responses for both Task 1 and Task 2.
  • The word counter is built into the interface, so you can easily track how many words you’ve written without needing to count them yourself.
  • Some test-takers may find typing easier than handwriting, especially for long essays.

4. Speaking

  • Duration: 11-14 minutes.
  • The Speaking section is still conducted face-to-face with a trained examiner. This part remains unchanged whether you’re doing the computer or paper-based version. However, if the situation demands an online speaking test you’ll be given the time and date for speaking test beforehand.

Test Day Process for CD IELTS

  • Identification and Check-In: As with paper-based IELTS, you’ll need to present identification, and your photograph will be taken.
  • Test Environment: The computer-based tests are conducted in a secure, quiet environment. Each candidate works at an individual computer station with noise-cancelling headphones for the Listening section.
  • Breaks: There are no breaks between the sections of the test, except before the Speaking test, which may be scheduled for the same day or on a different date.
